The carbon ion therapy system is a large medical device with completely independent intellectual property rights co-developed by the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Lanzhou Ion Therapy Co., LTD.
This system is composed of ion source, cyclotron injector, medium energy beam transport line, synchrotron accelerator, high energy beam transport line and treatment terminals. The cyclotron or linear accelerator is used as the injector and the synchrotron accelerator as the main accelerator. It can be equipped with horizontal, vertical and 45° treatment terminals. Each terminal is provided with beam delivery system, dose monitoring and recording system, image guidance system, and online monitoring and safety system. These terminals can be arranged individually according to the requirements of customers to meet the treatment needs of different parts and depth of tumors.

The ionic energy deposited at the end of the range (Bragg peak) has little damage to healthy tissues along the way; thanks to the small divergence and high positioning accuracy of the beam spot, the Bragg peak after being adjusted can accurately fall on the tumor target, with little damage to the surrounding healthy tissues.
The damage caused by Bragg peak region is mainly unrepairable DNA double-strand breaks, which can effectively kill tumor cells insensitive to conventional radiation and leave no tumor nuclei.
It is suitable for the treatment of radiation-resistant tumors and refractory tumors with short course of treatment and little radiation damage to healthy tissue.
